Shopify gift card email not received: what to check

A paid gift card has not arrived? Check fulfilment, recipient details, scheduled delivery and notifications before resending or replacing the card.

A customer has paid for a Shopify gift card, but the email has not arrived. Before you issue another card, establish whether the original was created, whether it is waiting for a scheduled delivery date and which person should receive the message.

Those checks matter because a missing email and a missing gift card need different repairs. Creating a replacement too early can leave you trying to reconcile two cards for one purchase.

This guide covers Shopify’s native digital gift cards. If an app sells or delivers your vouchers, identify that app first and check its delivery records alongside the Shopify order.

Start with one affected purchase

Choose a recent example and keep the investigation tied to it. Ask the buyer for the order number, purchase email address and whether they entered a separate recipient or delivery date. Confirm their identity through your normal customer-service process before changing where anything is sent.

Then work through four questions:

  1. Was a genuine gift card product purchased and fulfilled?
  2. Does the corresponding gift card exist?
  3. Who should receive it, and when?
  4. Was the relevant notification sent, and can that person find it?

Record the answer at each stage. A screenshot of a payment confirmation alone does not tell you where the gift-card journey stopped.

Check that the order can create a gift card

Shopify creates the digital card when an order containing a gift card product is fulfilled. An ordinary product called “Gift voucher” does not become a working gift card simply because of its name. Shopify explicitly identifies this setup mistake in its gift card troubleshooting guidance.

Open the affected order and check the actual product setup. Then look for its corresponding record under Products > Gift cards. Match the purchase rather than assuming a similarly valued card belongs to it.

If the item was configured as an ordinary product, correct the selling setup for future purchases. For the existing purchase, arrange a controlled manual resolution after confirming payment and checking that no card has already been issued through another route. Keep that resolution linked to the original order.

Shopify’s current gift card settings guidance says gift cards are normally fulfilled automatically when an order is paid. However, order-processing settings can require manual fulfilment. Gift cards in medium- or high-risk orders are also excluded from automatic fulfilment.

Check the gift card line’s fulfilment state and the order’s risk information before changing anything. Review a held order through your normal fraud process; the customer’s request for faster delivery should not replace that review.

For a basket containing both a gift card and physical goods, investigate the relevant line items separately. Do not mark an unshipped parcel as fulfilled just to try to trigger the digital gift.

Separate the buyer’s receipt from the recipient’s gift

There are two gift-card notifications to recognise. New gift card goes to the customer or recipient receiving the card. Gift card receipt goes to the buyer when a separate recipient is added and confirms the destination or scheduled send. Shopify explains these roles in its gift card notification documentation.

Ask which message is missing. A buyer showing you their receipt does not establish that the intended recipient has opened their gift email. Equally, resending a general order confirmation is not a targeted repair for a missing gift-card notification.

Check the recipient and scheduled date

Where the theme supports recipient fields, a buyer can provide a recipient email and an optional send-on date. Shopify’s current recipient-field guidance says scheduled gift cards are sent approximately between 4 am and 10 am in the purchasing customer’s time zone.

Check the date and relevant time zone before treating a scheduled gift as overdue. Compare the intended recipient address with the submitted details, including spelling. Do not assume the store’s UK time zone determines that delivery window.

If the buyer expected to enter a recipient but never saw the option, inspect the gift card product template actually used on your live store. A feature available in a theme does not prove it is enabled on that particular product page.

For manually created cards, check the sending step

A card created directly in the admin follows a different process from a purchased gift card product. Shopify’s manual creation instructions include adding the customer and choosing Send gift card, followed by the sending action. Saving the record is not the whole process.

Check whether a customer was attached and whether sending was completed. Shopify also says that, when both an email address and phone number are supplied for this process, the gift card is sent by email. Do not promise an SMS without checking which contact details were used.

Inspect the notification before blaming the inbox

For automatic emails, Shopify provides a way to review notifications in the customer timeline. An unsuccessful send displays a warning. These delivery-status features do not apply to emails sent directly from the customer profile.

Use the available record to establish which notification was attempted. Keep any visible error and its time for support. Avoid turning “a send was attempted” into “the recipient definitely saw it”.

If the email arrives but contains the wrong information or an unusable link, inspect the notification template. The storefront gift card page and the notification email are separate customisation areas; changing one should not be assumed to repair the other.

Shopify’s recipient-field guidance also warns that customised notifications or added languages may lack the necessary recipient fields. Ask your developer to compare the affected template and language with the supported version. Preserve your existing changes before considering a reset, then test the actual recipient route.

If the message was sent but cannot be found

Ask the correct recipient to search their mailbox, including spam and junk. Shopify’s customer-notification guidance recommends trying an alternative address with a different email provider if problems persist.

Agree any address change with the verified customer first. For a workplace mailbox, the recipient’s IT team may also be able to check whether the message was held. Keep your troubleshooting focused on the missing notification; another promotional email will not prove that gift-card delivery works.

Resend the existing card before considering a replacement

Shopify’s gift card management guide provides a Resend gift card action under Products > Gift cards. It emails the existing card to its original customer. For a partially used card, the notification reflects the remaining balance.

Confirm the destination before using it, particularly when the original purchase named a separate recipient. Do not assume this action lets you redirect the gift to any address.

The admin shows only the last four characters of a created card’s code. That is expected; use the order association and balance to identify the correct record rather than treating the hidden full code as evidence that creation failed.

Keep replacement and deactivation separate from resending. Deactivation is permanent. If replacement is necessary, reconcile the original card’s status and remaining balance first, document who authorised the replacement and check that the customer is left with the intended usable value.

Prove the whole journey after the repair

A template preview helps with appearance. To accept the repair, ask for evidence from the customer route that failed. Use addresses your team controls and agree how any live purchase, issued value and refund will be reconciled before testing.

Choose the relevant checks rather than buying multiple cards without a plan:

  • Buying for yourself: verify that the expected card is created and its email reaches the buyer.
  • Buying for someone else: use different controlled buyer and recipient addresses and check both notifications.
  • Scheduled delivery: choose a future date, record the buyer’s time zone and verify delivery after the expected window.
  • Mixed baskets: check the gift-card journey without incorrectly completing physical fulfilment.
  • Custom templates: open the received email on a phone and follow its link to the correct gift card page.

Record the order reference, card reference, destination and observed outcome without copying full redemption codes into a general support ticket. A useful handover should explain what failed, what changed and which route now works.

If the fault remains, give Shopify Support or the relevant app provider one complete example rather than a general “emails are broken” report. Include the theme or app involved, fulfilment state, intended send date and available notification evidence.
